Ray’s Mediterranean Restaurant, Axminster, Devon
No need to tell you what sort of food they do at Ray’s Mediterranean Restaurant in Axminster because it’s obvious. It’s very tasty too, but then, this place was founded by an experienced chef who brought plenty of influence from his homeland of Malta. The atmosphere in the restaurant is usually buzzing at the weekends, or at least, it was pre-pandemic. By day it’s all light and airy, by evening there’s a much more intimate feel with table lamps on and candlelight.
Start off with the likes of King Prawns, Mussels or Calamari – fresh fish features big on the menu at Ray’s Mediterranean Restaurant, just as it would in Malta; it’s a blessing that the Jurassic Coast is only down the road so getting his hands on the day’s catch isn’t a problem. For mains there’s a good choice of pasta dishes (Pomodoro, Bolognese, Carbonara and Ray’s scallop special among them), pizzas and temptations like Sicilian poached hake, Peppered chicken and Homemade Mediterranean vegetable Wellington. If you plump for a pizza give the Axminster Deluxe a go – succulent seafood, prawns, king prawns, scallops, mussels, white fish flakes, salmon chunks, anchovies, spring onions and dill.
When the weather is behaving itself local people sit at tables outside the restaurant and enjoy their coffee whilst they watch the world go by, or tuck into an ice cream from Joe Delucci’s Gelato - very Mediterranean.
