Bicton Park Botanical Gardens, Budleigh Salterton, Devon
Here’s a good idea for a day out when you’re on your holidays in Devon. Bicton Park Botanical Gardens cover 64 acres in the beautiful Otter Valley near Budleigh Salterton and are open every day except for Christmas Day and Boxing Day, so whatever time of year you’re staying at Stonehayes Farm holiday cottages, this is one to remember.
The 18th century botanical park features gardens from around the world including American, Italian and Mediterranean; each one is a pleasure to stroll through, transporting you to other climes. The gardens are famous for the historic glasshouses, which are just as stunning architecturally as they are for the plants. Here’s where you can see the second largest Palm House in Britain, made from over 18,000 panes of glass!
Go and look around the pretty little church within the grounds, explore the Fernery with its quirky Victorian shell house; wander through the arboretum, have a ride on the Bicton Woodland Railway, and see the huge collection of bygones in the rural life museum. Stop for a game of mini golf, then see what you can spot on the nature trails.
If the young ‘uns are still full of energy there are indoor and outdoor play areas, little houses to explore, and a covered farmland where they can ride pedal tractors and. Your visit wouldn’t be complete without a stop off at the gift shop and a bite to eat in The Orangery.
Dogs are allowed at Bicton Park on leads, but some areas, like The Orangery and the play areas, are out of bounds.
