Bicton Park Botanical Gardens, Budleigh Salterton, Devon
Here’s a good idea for a day out when you’re on your holidays in Devon. Bicton Park Botanical Gardens cover 64 acres in the beautiful Otter Valley near Budleigh Salterton and are open every day except for Christmas Day and Boxing Day. This 18th century botanical park has gardens from around the world including American, Italian and Mediterranean, as well as historic glasshouses which are just as stunning architecturally as they are for the plants. See the second largest Palm House in Britain, made from over 18,000 panes of glass, the quirky shell house in the Fernery, and the charming little church; explore the arboretum, ride the Bicton Woodland Railway, and see the huge collection of bygones in the rural life museum. Have a game of hide and seek with the family, play mini golf then see what you can spot on the nature trails.
If the young ‘uns are still full of energy there’s an Astro turf football pitch, pedal tractors and indoor and outdoor play areas. Allow time for refreshments in the Bicton Restaurant or The Orangery.
Dogs are allowed on leads but some areas, such as The Orangery and the play areas, are out of bounds.
