Cullompton Town Trail, Cullompton, Devon

If you need a reason to walk around the historic mid Devon town of Cullompton make it the Cullompton Town Trail. This is something the whole family can join in, discovering the town’s rich and fascinating past. It won’t take you more than an hour or so, plan it to wind up with coffee and cake at The Bakehouse.

The trail starts at the Town Hall, and from there you follow the boards so it’s easy-peasy to find your way round. That part of town is called the Higher Bullring because of the cattle market that ran there until 1918. After that, the trail takes you to several historical locations that stand out amongst the rest of the town; centuries old buildings with slightly mis-skewed angles and leaning to one side, all part of their charm.
Next stop is the War Memorial - make sure you look out for the line of blue paving stones which mark the old watercourse. After that, you’ll see the old Mill Leat where what’s left of the sluice gates can be seen, and on to St Boniface Roman Catholic Church with a notably Spanish look.

You’ll find out about the huge fire that nearly destroyed the whole town in 1839, besides other interesting facts, but hey, let’s not spoil it for you.
