Dartington Hall, Totnes, Devon

If you find yourself wondering what to do when you’re on holiday in Devon, particularly if you’re venturing south for a day out, go visit Dartington Hall near Totnes. The Hall is run by a charitable trust that offers learning programmes in the arts, ecology and social justice, so they have courses, workshops and events like live music, theatre, cinema and exhibitions going on throughout the year. But there’s a lot more to Dartington than that; with beautiful Grade II listed gardens, 3 cafes and a pub, and the chance for a little retail therapy, it’s a lovely place to while away the time.

Take a wonder through the gardens and grounds and you’ll notice the overwhelming sense of peace and place; apart from the well considered planting there are sculptures, ancient tress that include a 1,500 year old yew, and an activity trail for children. Best of all is to find somewhere to sit and just be for a moment or two, enjoy the glorious vistas, engage your senses in a little mindfulness.

If you fancy giving your legs a good stretch take a longer walk through the woodlands or the deer park, or along the River Dart to Totnes. Wholesome fresh air, fantastic surroundings, and the good thing is, it doesn’t cost much. Then treat yourselves to a bite to eat at The Green Table or The White Hart before you potter round the shops where you can browse the lifestyle and homewares, toys and stationery, clothes and upcycled furniture. The chances are you’ll find a little something you’ll want to buy, something to serve as a reminder of your day out at Dartington – that and the memories.

The Welcome Centre at Dartington is open from 8.00am-8.00pm every day. You’d be wise to check the website to see when the gardens, shops and cafes are open.
