Darts Farm, Topsham, Devon

What started as one of Devon’s first pick-your-own farms has grown so much over the last 50 years that it’s become one of the biggest and the best South West destinations for foodies and out of town shopping.

The focus is on the abundance of goodies grown, raised or produced by local suppliers; you’ll need a big shopping bag because there is so much here – fish that comes in daily from the local boats, meat from West Country farms, fruit and veg from the fields, freshly baked bread, and all manner of jams and preserves, pies, pasties, cakes, cheese and small batch drinks. Food is served all day in the restaurant, onsite cafes and shacks, so whatever time of day you visit, there’s no reason to go hungry; tuck into a hearty cooked breakfast, fish and chips straight out of the fryer, or a big fat slice of cake and a pot of tea.

Have a browse around the lifestyle shops whilst you’re here – Orange Tree, Cotswold, Fired Earth and Aga are among them, and if you have time for a little pampering, there’s a Treatment Loft where you can unwind with a massage or pedicure. Wander out to the wetlands and take five in the bird hide, see what you can spot, hire bikes and go for a ride along the beautiful Exe estuary – you can even try your hand at catching a fish on the coarse lakes. Enjoy the wholesome fresh air, go back to your holiday cottage at Stonehayes Farm with the boot of the car full of delights.
