Dunkeswell Airfield Heritage Centre, Dunkeswell, Honiton, Devon

Dunkeswell Airfield Heritage Centre was built high up on the Blackdown Hills in 1942-43 to serve as the only US naval base in Europe during WWII. USAAF and USN forces were stationed here and missions took off from the airfield to fight in The Battle of the Atlantic. It’s a fascinating part of our country’s history and has been well documented with archives that include over 400 photographs of day to day life for the men and women who lived here; there is also a large display of memorabilia and replica uniforms, dioramas and short films.

It’s worth a visit when you’re staying down the road at one of our family friendly and dog friendly Devon holiday cottages, and if you go, you should make time for a bite to eat in The Aviator Coffee Bar and Restaurant. There’s something very nice about sitting by the window and watching the planes come and go, and parachutes landing.
