Fat Otter, Ottery St Mary, Devon

Fat Otter is easily the best of the very few places to eat in Ottery St Mary – in fact it’s well worth driving here if you’re staying nearby on your holiday in Devon just for the excellent dining experience. It’s only a small family run restaurant but the food they serve is nothing short of amazing, from a changing seasonal menu that features fresh local produce. If you don’t want a bellyfull, go for drinks in the cosy bar area and have homemade nibbles and snacks.

Nibbles and starters include Basil, tomato & mozzarella arancini, with arabiata sauce and prosciutto, Local prawn, black pudding & butterbean pot with garlic crumb, and Baba ghanoush with spiced glazed carrots, pickled onion and toasted sourdough. Moving onto mains, you can choose from the likes of Pan fried duck breast with duck faggot, parsnip puree, fondant potato, seasonal greens and duck sauce, 6oz Beefburger with smoked streaky bacon, American cheese, lettuce, burger sauce and battered pickle in a brioche bun, with triple cooked chips, and Braised ox cheek in red wine sauce with spiced glazed carrot, salsa verde, buttery mash potato and seasonal greens.

Round it off with something tempting from the dessert menu – perhaps Coconut pannacotta with pineapple, mango and passion fruit, or a Chocolate fondant with miso caramel and homemade vanilla ice cream.

Good service, relaxed and happy atmosphere.
