Mickey’s Beach Bar & Restaurant, Exmouth, Devon
If you’re in Exmouth and you come over all peckish, head along the seafront to Mickey’s Beach Bar & Restaurant. What you’ll find is laid-back all day dining from chef Michael Caines, so you can go for coffee, lunch, tea and cake or dinner, you can go for cocktails and sundowners, and if it’s a glorious summers day and you’d like to eat down by the sea, well that’s fine - order a takeout because the beach is just across the road.
Donwstairs at Mickey’s Beach Bar & Restaurant is the bar where pizzas, salads and snacks are on the menu; upstairs it all opens out in the restaurant, light and airy, a distinctly maritime vibe, and enormous expanses of glass giving astonishing views of the sea. Sit indoors or out on the terrace where the retractable roof means you can still soak up the sun when it’s hot.
Now the food. It’s good, very good. Steaks, pork chops, lamb rump from the grill, chargrilled fish, grilled lobster, Indonesian seafood curry, Miso glazed grilled aubergine, Mickey’s vegan burger… the meat, seafood and veg is sourced locally and cooked simply over charcoal, bringing out all those fabulous flavours. Go on a Sunday and you’re in for a treat because they do a fantastic roast.
Friday and Saturday nights from 5pm are when the resident DJ takes to the decks and everyone else takes to the dance floor. What they strive for here is a big happy vibe, a celebration of good food and good times in gorgeous coastal surroundings, and that’s exactly how it is.
