Just down the road from our family friendly Devon holiday cottages is Otter Valley Ice Cream & Field Kitchen where they make the most lipsmackingly good gelato style ice cream, so good in fact that it's won awards, which says a lot. Not bad for a family run farm that about 10 years ago decided to have a little hut at the end of the lane selling home made ice cream! Go there now and you'll be very impressed - they have a rustic style timber field kitchen, all soaring beams and huge expanses of glass, which is good because when the weather's a bit murky it means you can still enjoy the glorious views over the Otter Valley.
The ice cream is made from scratch in small batches using milk from the cows who graze just a field away. They do the classic flavours like Madagascan vanilla, Chocolate and Strawberry and some more creative combinations - Lemon curd, Salted caramel with chocolate brownie, and Strawberry and balsamic vinegar. You can also try seasonal delights like Cream tea flavour, Ginger & butternut squash and Seabuckthorn.
Otter Valley Ice Cream & Field Kitchen serve breakfasts and light lunches too, with the stone baked pizzas proving to be such a hit that they stay open a bit later on Fridays duing the summer for pizza nights. Like the ice cream, pizzas are entirely made on site using their own sourdough, their own toppings and a proper pizza oven. From the menu are the Carnivore (homecooked honey and mustard roast ham, sausage, chorizo, chicken, cheese, tomato, chilli), the Wilderness (mushrooms, cheese, white sauce, garlic butter, cherry tomato, rocket), Far East Devon (spiced lamb, pickled pink onions, feta, green herb dressing, harissa yoghurt) and others.
A rather special place. You really should go.
