Paignton Zoo, Paignton, Devon

It’s no surprise that Paignton Zoo is one of the South West’s biggest attractions; with over 2,500 animals, reptiles, amphibians and birds this makes for a brilliant family day out when you're staying at your Devon holiday cottage. The zoo plays an enormous part in the protection and conservation of rare and endangered species from all over the world and as you stroll around the 80 acre site the sights and sounds will transport you on an unforgettable journey around the globe, from the woodlands and savannahs of South America to the grasslands of Africa. Among the residents are rhinos, giraffes, zebras, cheetahs, gorillas, red pandas and armadillos, and you’ll see several species of monkeys, a colourful array of birds and all manner of reptiles.

As well as the animals there are botanical gardens at Paignton Zoo, featuring plants and trees from countries far and wide – the massive Titan arum and the giant water lilies are quite incredible. There will be shrieks a-plenty when you walk the wobbly bridge to Lemur Wood, smiles of delight when you spot the native birds and animals on the nature trail, and then there are outdoor play areas and indoor soft play.

You should really allow a whole day for your visit to Paignton Zoo because there’s so much here and it would be shame to miss anything. If you’re pushed for time, you could squeeze in as much as you can in 4 -5 hours but if you do, check the website and plan things well to make sure you see everything you want to and maybe take in a Keeper Talk.  Take a picnic, or allow for lunch in the restaurant, otherwise grab something tasty from one of the food cabins. Whatever you do, don’t leave without going to the very well stocked shop to buy a souvenir of your visit. This really is a day out to remember.
