Powderham Castle, Exeter, Devon

Powderham Castle is a great place to visit while staying at your holiday cottage in Devon; it’s only a few miles from Exeter and has a lovely setting right on the banks of the River Exe, but apart from that, there’s plenty to do there. The thing is where to start first – house or garden? Join a guided tour of the house and you’ll find out the key parts of its history as you go from exquisite room to exquisite room.

The grounds are gorgeous; stroll around at your leisure and enjoy every moment – the beautiful scents in the Rose Garden, the little summerhouse in the American Woodland Garden. Go on a tractor trailer tour of the Deer Park, venture up to the Belvedere Tower for incredible views of the castle grounds and the once bustling shipping lanes between Topsham and Exmouth. Have a wander round the Secret Garden (don’t tell anyone!), take the children to the play area and to Pets Corner to meet all the donkeys, pigs, goats, guinea-pigs and chickens.

Best way to round off your visit? Afternoon tea in the café, of course, or a very tempting alternative is a peaceful picnic in the Secret Garden.

Dogs allowed in some area so check before you go.
