Salcombe Maritime Museum, Salcombe, Devon

Salcombe has had strong links with ships and the sea since time immemorable, so Salcombe Maritime Museum is a veritable hoard of models, paintings, photographs and artefacts. Even if you’re not that into ships you’ll find something that piques your interest – the finds recovered from the seabed and shipwrecks in the area are fascinating and the story of the 1916 Salcombe Lifeboat Disaster is very moving.

Young seadogs will be hard to drag away from the hands-on displays and the pirate’s treasure chest full of pieces of eight, cutlasses and pistols; they can even dress up and get into the spirit of things, which reminds us – have you heard our pirate joke? Why are pirates called pirates? Because they aaaarrr! (groan). There’s a gallery of paintings featuring the racing fruit schooners that were built in Salcombe in the 19th century and a collection of tools used in the boat building trade that still continues in the town to this day. Entry is free which is surprising considering how much there is to see and how much you can learn here. A very worthwhile way to pass an hour or so when you're staying in Devon for your family holiday.
