Starcross, Exeter, Devon
Starcross is a small village on the Exe estuary just 8 miles from Exeter and 4 from Dawlish, and what a lovely little place it is, worth a visit when you’re on your holidays in Devon. It’s a peaceful here, but there’s plenty going on, with local shops, and it’s good for fishing, sailing and birdwatching, or if you have a thing for railways it will interest you because it’s home to Brunel’s Atmospheric Railway. One of the pumping stations still stands and the modern railway runs alongside the older line, just a few feet from the waters edge.
A nice way to get here is by ferry, then have a wander round, stopping off for something to eat at The Atmospheric Railway inn or The Driftwood Inn on The Strand, or take an amble down to Cockwood Harbour where it’s all very picturesque and go to The Anchor on the quayside.
The backdrop is one of glorious countryside and there are walks along the estuary or up over the South West Coast Path; the views and the sunsets can be spectacular.
