The Bank House Café, Charmouth, Dorset

The Bank House Cafe isn’t a big place but if you’re in Charmouth for a day by the sea when you’re on your holiday in the West Country and there’s not that many of you, this is a good one to bear in mind for lunch. They can accommodate bigger groups but you’ll need to arrange that with them beforehand.

Like all good local cafes should do, The Bank House welcomes its locals and its visitors in the same happy smiley way; some people live close by and might pop in every day, others are passing by or on holiday but everyone is treated the same by the helpful team who work here. They open with breakfasts with things like granola, fruit and yoghurt, croissant and of course, the Full English. After that the menu is generally lighter lunches, but still enough to fill you up, and what’s good is that there’s something to satisfy most tastes – go for the traditional fish and chips, quiche of the day, a jacket potato, flatbread or sandwich, or try something a little different like Cumin & mint lamb with feta, lentils, mango dressing and pickled onions, or a Kale & hemp burger.

And then there are cakes. And oh, these are GOOD, so the problem is choosing what to have; Dorset apple cake, frangipani, coffee & walnut, vegan chocolate fudge cake… And we didn’t tell you about the cheese scones, did we? Elasticated trousers might be an idea, unless you have a lot of willpower.
