The George, Charmouth, Dorset

The George is a family run pub and is easy to find because it’s right on the main street in Charmouth, just down the hill from the turning to the beach. It’s actually one of the oldest continuously run pubs in the country, which is quite something these days. If you’re not one for pretensions, you’ll like this because there’s none of that here; this place has all the traditions of a Great British Pub, serving homemade food, welcoming locals and visitors alike, including families with well behaved children and dogs.

The menu isn’t a long one by any means, which is generally a good indication that the food is cooked to order and homemade. They use locally sourced produce wherever possible – meat from the local butchers, veg from nearby suppliers, all put to especially good use in the popular Sunday carvery. There are daily specials, or on the lunch menu are Honey glazed gammon steak with chips, peas and pineapple, and a choice of burgers - Beef burger, Buttermilk chicken breast burger, and for the vegetarians and vegans, Aromatic garden burger. If you want something lighter opt for soup of the day, a baked potato, or a sandwich; there’s children’s menu and even a doggy menu, so no-one’s left out here.

Out the back of The George there’s a big garden with a really good play area and an animal corner where you can go and say hello to the pygmy goats who live there. They’ve obviously got the balance right here because the reviews are good.
