The Holman Clavel, Culmhead, Taunton, Somerset

The Holman Clavel is one of those proper country pubs that are becoming increasingly hard to find these days – even in these parts. So many have had a jolly good makeover and have become more of a restaurant than somewhere to go to sit in the corner with a pint or two of the local brew and put the world to rights – but that’s fine, that’s the way some country pubs have had to go in order to stay in business.

What you’ll notice about The Holman Clavel is the timeless charm that exudes both inside and out; it’s rustic and it’s full of character and is entirely unpretentious so they pull off that blend of a good drinking hole and a great place to eat. The furniture is mismatched, there are flagstones on the floor, centuries old ceiling beams, and an open fireplace at both ends of the pub. It’s the kind of place where all are welcome – kids, dogs, and even wellington boots.

The food is very good, honest home cooked fare made using local produce as much as possible, and with an element of creative flair. On the menu are pub classics like fish and chips, bangers and mash and burgers and more fancy dishes - Lamb rack, minted mash & rosemary jus, Pork belly with roast potatoes, green veg and cider sauce, and for the vegetarians, Courgette & Aubergine Korma.

The thing is with The Holman Clavel is that you feel welcome, which is what it’s all about. You can chat with the locals, take a beer out in the garden and enjoy the beautiful countryside and fresh air of the Blackdown Hills, and in the summer, join in the foot stomping fun when there’s live music. Perfick.
