The Norman Lockyer Observatory, Sidmouth, Devon

The Norman Lockyer Observatory is high up on the clifftops above Sidmouth on the Jurassic Coast where it’s stood for over 100 years. Until the 1980’s the observatory was used as a centre for astrophysical and geophysical research; these days it’s run by a group of dedicated volunteers and is put to good use for amateur astronomy, meteorology, radio astronomy and the promotion of science education. Regular open days are held there, and open evenings, which are something else, especially if it’s a clear night.

Check the website for details and though it’s not essential to book, if there’s a big group of you, it’s advisable.
