The Otter Inn, Weston, Honiton, Devon

What’s nice about The Otter Inn is that it’s one of those traditional country pubs that isn’t trying to be anything it isn’t; it’s down-to-earth and honest, and the family who run it do their best to cater for everyone. What’s lovely is the setting, in a quiet hamlet a few miles from Honiton, right on the banks of the River Otter, with views over the Devon fields.

Inside there’s a spacious dining area, because that’s why most people come here – to eat averagely priced homecooked food chosen from a menu that pretty much caters for all tastes and showcases meat, game, fish and veg from local suppliers. The Main Courses and 2-4-1 Menus list pub classics, British favourites and a few world flavours, and there’s also a daily specials board.

On the Main Courses menu are things like Fish and chips, Slow roasted belly pork, Aromatic garden burger and a choice of steaks and pizzas. On the 2-4-1 Menu are Fishcakes of the day, Mediterranean vegetable lasagne, Steak & Otter Ale pie, and Ham, egg & chips. If it’s lunchtime sandwiches and baguettes are available, if your children don’t want to eat grown up food, there’s a menu for them too.

Wander round to the Locals bar for a game of pool and a pint of well kept local ale; if it’s a chilly day the log fire will be lit. If the sun has got his hat on, the best place to be is out in the beer garden where there’s plenty of seating and a play area. Dogs are welcome in the garden but MUST be kept on leads, there are limited dog friendly tables inside, which is why advance booking is important.
