The Prospect Inn, Exeter, Devon

The Prospect Inn is what you’d call a proper pub, it’s old school, it’s friendly and relaxed, and serves good honest pub food that’s all homemade and gets good reviews. The position is enviable, down on the historic Quay overlooking the peaceful waters of the Exeter Ship Canal.

The pub is owned by a local brewery so if you want to try a pint of local ale or cider this is the place to go, and as you’re here, you ought to stop for a bite to eat. On the menu are pub classics like Homemade Devon steak and ale pie with mash and garden peas, Fish and chips, and a very tempting Homemade Elston Farm venison and hog lasagne with garlic bread. If you fancy something smaller choose a small plate – maybe Devon vegetable pasty with apple an Westcountry cider chutney, or  a Home mad Scotch egg with tomato and smoked garlic chutney; even the chutney is homemade, which is impressive.

In the summer it’s good to sit out on the quayside, all strung with bunting, and watch the world go by. Great ambience.
