The Salterton Arms, Budleigh Salterton, Devon

The Salterton Arms is a traditional town pub just 2 minutes’ walk from the beach at Budleigh Salterton; known locally as ‘The Salt’ anyone who steps through the door receives a warm welcome, provided they haven’t misbehaved themselves in the pub in the past.

If the sea air has whipped up an appetite go and have some tucker. It’s all homemade using produce from Devon based suppliers as much as possible; fresh fruit and veg has come from nearby farms, meat has been raised and grazed in fields close by, and fish comes from the fishmonger a few miles away in Exmouth.

Mon-Weds they do a reduced menu called ‘Big Al’s’, after the landlord. On it are Classic Big Al’s’ Smash burger with Monterey Jack cheese, gherkin, chips and side salad, Classic beer battered local haddock with chips and peas, Homemade steak and ale pie with chips and peas, and Homemade ratatouille with fresh bread.

Thursday to Sunday there are baked potatoes, paninis and ciabattas at lunchtime, as well as favourites like Ham, egg and chips, Homemade beef chilli, and Moules mariniere and chips. Friday or Saturday evenings you can have the likes of Pan seared seabass with Mediterranean vegetables and potato gratin, Chilli dusted Cornish hake on a bed of spinach with brandy infused bearnaise sauce and potato gratin, and Locally sourced prime rib-eye steak with chips, oyster mushrooms, side salad and peppercorn sauce.

There’s also a stone baked pizza menu and one for the kids.

They love hosting events at The Salt and often have live music, bingo and the occasional drag act.
