The Salutation Inn, Topsham, Exeter, Devon

In the heart of Topsham, The Salutation Inn has been providing hospitality to travellers and those in need of sustenance since 1720; these days it has an excellent reputation, both as a hotel and for the foods served in its restaurants. The atmosphere is relaxed, the service is impeccable.

The unique three storey historic building has retained much of its original character, with some incredible features, including the main entrance door and a unique Venetian glass window etched with graffiti from 1774. Go for lunch or afternoon tea in the Glasshouse Restaurant set in a historic courtyard with a glazed atrium; on Fridays and Saturdays dinner is served here beneath the stars, otherwise it’s served in the more intimate setting of The Restaurant.

It's no surprise that The Salutation Inn gets excellent reviews; menus are creative and food is cooked to perfection. Examples of what’s on the A La Carte menu (there’s also one for vegans and vegetarians) are:

  • Curried monkfish, langoustine & squid ink risotto, bok choi, and lime butter
  • West country beef fillet, stuffed bone marrow, Jacobs Ladder, beef consume jelly, root vegetables, celeriac remoulade, pomme purée and beef red wine sauce
  • Stuffed skate wing, wild mushroom mousse, puy lentil, king oyster mushroom and fish red wine sauce

Lunch is served 12:00-2:00pm, afternoon tea 4:00pm-6:00pm, and dinner 6:00pm-8:00pm, or you can pop in for coffee from 9:00am. Booking is essential as reservations are taken as much as six months in advance. Groups of 8+ must leave a £100 deposit and choose either the A La Carte or Tasting menu, tables of 12 or more are treated as private dining.
