Thelma Hulbert Gallery, Honiton, Devon

Honiton is just down the road from our Devon holiday cottages, so the chances are you’ll pop down for a browse around when you’re staying at Stonehayes Farm.  When you do, factor in enough time to go to the Thelma Hulbert Gallery, right opposite the main car park in the centre of town.

This award winning gallery is housed in a light and airy period building that was once the home of renowned artist Thelma Hulbert. Naturally, there’s a permanent collection of her works and regularly changing exhibitions of contemporary art and craft, mostly from local artists. The other thing they do is host workshops and activities, and for the kids there’s a fantastic Learning Room with plenty of materials to use so you can go and sit down and spend a happy half an hour or so making something together. There’s also a café where you can stop for tea and cake, a wonderful garden, and a shop selling all kinds of delights from local makers – jewellery, textiles, prints, pottery and home accessories. We think of the Thelma Hulbert Gallery as one of those places that were you to stumble across it yourselves you’d be delighted – a serendipitous find indeed. But hey, we’ve told you about it now; do go and visit because honestly, it’s a lovely place.
