Axmouth, Seaton, Devon

If you venture over to Seaton on the Jurassic Coast when you’re on your family holiday in Devon, you’ll drive through Axmouth on your way there. This pretty little village has a backdrop of steeply wooded hills and the calm waters of the Axe estuary and could easily be described as picture postcard perfect. The main street is lined with old, mostly thatched cottages, a Norman church and two pubs.

It's a nice place for a stroll along the estuary, to sit and watch the multitude of birdlife or to enjoy fish and chips as the sun sets. If you stroll out along the harbour you can watch the local fishermen come in with their catch, stop for a bacon sarnie and a cup of tea at Chris's Café, and even hire a kayak or go sea fishing. Right out the end is Axmouth Harbour Beach, just across the spit from the main town beach at Seaton. It tends to be very quiet here – word is it’s a nudist beach but got to be honest, we’ve been coming here for years and have never seen anyone unclothed! It’s good for mackerel fishing, rockpooling at low tide, and because the beach is dog friendly all year round, it’s great for a shoreside walk with the pet pooch.

If you didn’t fill your bellies with fish and chips, on your way back call in to The Ship Inn for home cooked food.
