Bishopswood, Chard, Somerset

Like most of the villages in the Blackdown Hills, Bishopswood has a peaceful and timeless air, and is surrounded by softly rollingĀ Somerset countryside. The main street winds its way up the hill past centuries old cottages and more modern houses, past The Candlelight Inn, which by the way, does excellent food, including a superb Sunday roast. Book yourselves a table and arrive early so that you can get a good walk in. At the bottom of the village the River Yarty flows beneath the bridge where there are walks leading to well manged nature reserves; at the top of the hill are Bishopswood Meadows where you can spot an interesting variety of flora and fauna amongst what used to be working lime kilns and an old quarry.
