Burrow Farm Gardens, Dalwood, Axminster, Devon

If gardens are your thing, you really must go to Burrow Farm Gardens at Dalwood near Axminster when you’re staying at your holiday cottage in Devon. What makes it so special here is that it feels like you’ve discovered something quite secret, though you won’t be able to keep quiet about it because it’s so very, very lovely.

What one woman has created at Burrow Farm Gardens is incredible; the family still own and run the 13 acre gardens, all thought out so well that there’s constant colour throughout the year. The spring displays of bulbs and blossom are a very welcome sight after the long winter nights; in May the azaleas and rhododendron are at their peak, in June the wildflowers meadows are captivating, with native flowers and orchids.

Summer brings the lush greenery of the Grass Garden, the delicate scents of the Rose Garden and the best of the bog garden with giant rhubarb and candelabra primulas. Autumn is stunning, with the changing colours and ornamental grasses catching the unique light, even in deep winter, the sense of tranquillity is immense, especially when accompanied by the haunting song of a solitary robin.

Whatever the season, the backdrop is the endlessly rolling countryside of the Axe Valley. Trust us, you’ll want to linger, you’ll want to stop and stare, and you’ll go home with your head full of ideas and inspiration for your own little patch of the world. Before you do, be sure to stop at the Tea Rooms for homemade cake or made freshly made sandwich.
