Coldharbour Mill, Uffculme, Devon
If you’re looking for things to do that aren’t far from your large group holiday house in Devon, go to Uffculme and pay a visit to Coldharbour Mill. It’s not the biggest of places but it’s interesting and is a pleasant way to spend a couple of hours; as a bonus, you’ll probably learn a thing or two.
There are a few working woollen mills left in the country, but Coldharbour Mill is one of the oldest. It’s strange really, to think that many moons ago fleeces were sent out all over the world from this far flung corner of the Blackdown Hills to be spun into yarn, textiles and cloth. Nowadays they produce worsted knitting yarn using the old machinery; take a factory tour and you can see how it’s done.
You’ll find out more about the woollen trade in the small museum, and then, the fun bit – you can play dressing up (cameras at the ready!). Go and see the World War II Air Raid Shelter, stroll around the meadow and millpond and round off your trip with tea and cake in the café, and last but not least, a little something from the gift shop.
