Common Loaf Bakery & Tea Room, Dunkeswell, Honiton, Devon

Stentwood Farm is home to the people who run The Yellow Deli in Honiton; it’s where they live and work, happy amidst the beauty of the Blackdown Hills at Dunkeswell, and it’s where they have their Common Loaf Bakery & Tea Room.

Things are done on a ‘for what it’s worth’ basis in the tea room, so you pay what you think the food you’ve eaten was worth, the idea being to make the tea room accessible to all. That’s a really honest way of doing things and if it’s true that what you give out you get back, anyone who comes here and enjoys the fare and the hospitality will pay kindly.

The vibes are good here, the interiors are rustic and homespun, and if you go in the winter when it’s lovely and toasty with the underfloor heating and the wood-burner going, the ambience is a delight; you feel like you’re among friends. They welcome you, they’re happy to chat, and the service is the happy, friendly kind. When the weather is good sit outside in the sunshine, have your fill of the wholesome fresh air. The food is all handmade on site and is absolutely delicious, so go along, settle down for a while and enjoy a cup of tea with a steamed bun, the like of which you won’t find anywhere else round here. Maybe follow it with a piece of carrot cake or a carob brownie – it’s so hard not to!

Everything in the Common Loaf Bakery is homemade too, with the best days to go being Tuesday and Thursday because that’s when the shelves are stocked with freshly baked bread, cakes and pastries. You won’t find this kind of thing in the shops so you’d be wise to take a big basket and fill it with the likes of peanut butter granola, organic sourdough and a spelt loaf with honey.
