Custom House Visitor Centre, Exeter, Devon

Home for the Custom House Visitor Centre down on the Quayside in Exeter is a beautiful Georgian building overlooking the River Exe and the Exeter Ship Canal. Inside, the many displays, artefacts and illustrations bring the historical Quayside and its surrounds to life, so if you’re down on this way ambling about and you start wondering what it used to be like, go have a look round; a fascinating presentation tells you all about the city of Exeter’s history from Roman times up to present day, so it’s surprising what you can learn here.

The Custom House hosts arts and cultural events throughout the year, with regularly changing exhibitions. Get involved in some of the activities if you have time, like Quay Words, an exciting programme that looks at stories and writing, with a group specifically for young writers - great for the little ones!

This is also the starting point for Exeter Historic Quay tours led by Exeter’s Red Coats; book a place and keep your ears peeled for a historic commentary as you stroll along the river and the canal, if the sun is shining, all the better.
