Double Locks, Exeter, Devon

The Double Locks is a traditional country pub, dog friendly and family friendly, right on the banks of the Exeter ship canal, so 10/10 for location. If you can find a table outside in the huge beer garden all the better and with some areas covered and heated even if the weather isn’t so good it won’t necessarily spoil your fun.

The menu is seasonal British classics, served all day from brunch through to dinner; they do sharers, small plates and sandwiches including Oven baked nachos, Whole baked Camembert and a humdinger of a BLT sarnie. There’s a good choice of mains, among them Beer battered cod & chips, Chicken Schnitzel, the Double Locks burger, and Grilled asparagus with pea and broadbean salad, new potatoes, vegan feta and rocket. Go on a Sunday and you’re in for a treat and a half because the roasts are amazing.

Surely one of the best ways to get to the Double Locks is to hire kayaks or SUP boards from Saddles and Paddles on Exeter Quayside and paddle your way along the calm waters to the pub. Hard to beat.
