Dunkeswell Abbey, Dunkeswell, Honiton, Devon

There’s not much left of Dunkeswell Abbey but if historic buildings are your thing you might go and have a look because it’s fascinating to think how grand this place once was and to feel the whispers of this 13th century Cistercian monastery, founded by monks from Forde Abbey some 18 miles away on the Somerset and Dorset border.

The setting is tranquil to say the least, nestled in a valley in the beautiful Blackdown Hills a couple of miles from Dunkeswell village; where the cloister stood there’s now a pretty little church which is also worth popping your head into. When you’re done go up the road to Dunkeswell Airfield to watch the planes come and go from the Aviator Coffee Bar & Restaurant.
