Dunkeswell Airfield, Dunkeswell, Honiton, Devon

It’s surprising how easy it is to while away an afternoon at Dunkeswell Airfield, high up on the Blackdown Hills in Devon, especially of course, if light aircraft are your thing. You can hang about watching the planes come and go, the parachutists drifting down from the skies, and all the general activity that goes on there.

Something else you can do is go and have a look around the Heritage Centre, at the fascinating displays of the times when the airfield served as a military base. The artefacts, uniforms and photographs give you a very good insight into what it was like for the folk who lived there.

But what most people go to Dunkeswell Airfield for is to fly their own planes, for aircraft rides or flight training sessions – a brilliant idea if you’re staying down in Devon celebrating a special anniversary or birthday. The more courageous might even fancy the idea of a wing walk or yikes, a sky dive. Whatever you do, allow enough time for a bite to eat in The Aviator Coffee Bar & Restaurant where if you get a window seat, you can carry on watching the action.
