Hawkswood, Honiton, Devon

When you go for a stroll around Hawkswood make sure you take the time to stop and stare because small English woodlands like this are full of things to see if you look about. This 4 hectare site is a mix of woodland, grassland and heath, so is home to all kinds of flora and fauna, among them frogs and toads, dragonflies, butterflies and several types of fungi. See what you can spot as you amble round the waymarked trails.

You'll find Hawkswood 3 miles south east of Honiton, between the villages of Wilmington and Northleigh. There's a bit of parking at the start of the track leading to the woods, and something you need to know is that there might well be livestock grazing in the fields, so if you have your dog with you, be sure to keep him on a lead. Paths can be muddy, particularly after rainfall; wear your boots.
