Lyme Bay Winery, Shute, Axminster, Devon

Take a trip round the lanes to Lyme Bay Winery near Axminster when you’re staying at your Devon holiday cottage at Stonehayes Farm. This is a business that’s small but perfectly formed and there’s testament to that in the fact that they win awards for the excellent traditional drinks they produce. That’s because the people who work here love what they do and over the years have acquired a lot of specialist knowledge and skills, and a true love of flavours.

Take the fruit wines; it’s a taste of the English countryside, wrapped up in the seasons, all fresh or plump or mellow, and they’re so good you might well want one of each flavour. Imagine a cool glass of nettle wine on the first warm spring evening, elderflower or strawberry wine in the garden on a summers day; then damson or blackberry after a walk in the woods in autumn, the warm-inside feeling of ginger or mulled wine by the winter fireside. Isn’t it wonderful?

Lyme Bay Winery are also well known for the meads they produce, which also come in exciting flavours; you can stick with the traditional mead of course, or you can try chilli, black cherry or garden mead.

Go to the shop and treat yourselves; perhaps a sparkling English wine, spiced rum, Elderberry & Port liquer, Orange & Thyme Gin, or their new ‘Cyser’, which is a blend of mead and scrumpy cider. There’s always something for you to try, and remember, it’s all made here in the glorious Axe Valley – fermented, blended and aged onsite. Lovely. A proper taste of the West Country.
