Manor Gardens, Exmouth, Devon

Manor Gardens is one of Exmouth’s green spaces, so when you fancy a break from the busy seafront it’s a good place to go. What you’ll find is typical of town gardens; meandering paths, mature trees and very well-maintained flower beds. That’s the thing, whatever time of year it is, the gardens are so well kept, best in summer, of course, when the borders are a profusion of carefully planned colour.

The gardens were originally within the curtilage of a manor house that stood nearby and was demolished in 1894, and there is still a distinct Victorian air, with the iron railings that surround the gardens, and a rose and topiary garden. Look out for the sub-tropical bed, full of plants that flourish in the coastal climate, and the Carpet Bed, planted out every year to form a picture with a local link or theme.

The gardens play host to a number of community events throughout the year, such as music festivals and live theatre performances, which are always well attended. There’s a picnic area, or if you weren’t that organised, tucked away on the edge of the gardens is the award-winning Bumble and Bee Tea Room.
