Slapton, Kingsbridge, Devon

Roughly midway between Kingsbridge and Dartmouth on the coast of South Devon, Slapton is a very pretty village just half a mile from the beach, separated from it by Slapton Ley Nature Reserve, a lovely spot with a big freshwater lake that's home to rare flora and fauna.

The beach is an obvious pull for visitors, but wander up to the village and you’ll find a quieter place with a timeless feel and a thriving community. Roses clamber up the walls of the old stone cottages, some thatched, that line the narrow streets; there’s a little shop, a church and a chapel, a field studies centre and two good pubs, The Tower Inn and The Queen’s Arms. It’s a place where all feels well in the world, so instead of a beach picnic or a bite at the cafe, factor in a pub lunch, spend a little time ambling around and soak up the charm.
