Central to the menu at The Community Waffle House in Axminster are guess what? Waffles, of course! Finest Liege and Brussels waffles made from scratch to a secret recipe that’s been handed down through generations, adapted to include gluten free, dairy free and vegan options.
What they’ve done here is re-invented the waffle if you like, given it a whole new meaning in both sweet and savoury dishes. They’re open all day, so breakfast is served from 9:00; if you’re up early enough, go along and fill your belly – perhaps The Soulful One (streaky bacon, avocado and fried egg), The Breakfast Burger (streaky bacon, fried egg, sausage patty and hash brown) or The American One (bacon with lashings of maple syrup).
The waffle is diversified later in the morning with a splendid choice of Waffle Toasties, Waffle Burgers and Waffle Fries (seriously good!), or you can tuck into a sweet waffle any time of day – but what will it be? The Biscoff One (Biscoff spread, vanilla ice cream, homemade caramel sauce and crumble flake), The Heavenly One (vanilla ice-cream, raspberries and Belgian white chocolate), The Rocky One (honeycomb ice-cream, Maltesers, marshmallows and Belgian chocolate), or some other delight from the menu?
Waffles not your thing? Have some homemade soup, or toast, or a generous slice of homemade cake. And yes, we are waffling on, but the drinks are pretty amazing too, especially the coffee, herbal teas, smashes and shakes.
It’s a nice place, The Community Waffle House, up on the top floor of a redeveloped department store right in the middle of town. Look out of the window and you’re up there with the tree tops and the church tower; down below on Thursdays, which is market day, there’s quite a buzz and it’s good to feel like you’re a part of it. It’s all light and airy, there’s a play area for the little ones and there are board games. The team are a very friendly bunch who love bringing people together and putting smiles on faces.
