The Goat Walk, Topsham, Exeter, Devon
If you decide to visit Topsham when you’re on your group holidays in Devon, factor in enough time for a stroll along The Goat Walk. It’s a really good way to take in the charm and the relaxed atmosphere of this beautiful little town on the Exe estuary, a way to see the things you might otherwise have missed.
The Goat Walk will take you about an hour; it’s a circular loop that’s easy walking and pushchair friendly on roads and pathways, taking in a nature reserve and The Goat Walk itself. Start from the quayside and head out along the Strand until you reach the water – this is the Goat Walk, a narrow path at the edge of the waterside. Sit a while on one of the benches and enjoy the coastal views – just be aware that the tide can come right up to the wall and there aren’t any railings, so you’ll need to keep hold of younger children and dogs.
Continue on to Bowling Green Road and the nature reserve, or if you have a dog, through the field (dogs aren’t allowed in the nature reserve as there are nesting birds). From there it’s easy to follow the slight hill and the road to the left back down to the quayside. Round off your walk with a bite to eat in The Lighter Inn, or wander down the side road to The Passage House Inn.
