The Golden Lion, Tipton St John, Ottery St Mary, Devon

Go to the Golden Lion in Tipton St John and you’ll find all the traditions of a village pub – the low beamed ceilings, thick stone walls and on colder days, a blazing log fire. The people who run the pub are friendly and they know how to make you feel welcome; find a seat and you’ll notice how they’ve injected their own eclectic tastes into the pub, with Art Deco bits and pieces and quite a bit of local art.

So, the food. Well, at lunch time there are sandwiches, a Ploughman’s and pub favourites like Fish and chips, Home cooked ham, egg and chips, and Steak & kidney pudding. In the evening you can start with the likes of Prawns in filo with chilli jam, Escargots or Home smoked duck salad and move onto mains of Moules Frite, Lamb shank, and Magret de canard (breast of duck with an oriental plum sauce).

If the sun is shining take a drink and sit outside on the terrace or in the beer garden and enjoy the ambience. A good one to earmark for after a walk along the River Otter from Ottery St Mary.
