Tipton St John, Nr Ottery St Mary, Devon
Walk along the River Otter from Ottery St Mary to Tipton St John and you'll find yourselves in a peaceful and secluded village surrounded by spectacular Devon countryside. It's a tiny place, though it has a shop and a school and a charming church that stands on a hillside backed by woodland. There's a surprisingly big community feel in the shape of sports clubs including tennis, football and cricket, and the pub, The Golden Lion is very much a hub of the village. Stop by for a drink or lunch and then wander back to Ottery or do the circular walk to Newton Poppleford and back; what's nice is just spending the day in the fresh air in such a beautiful and realtively unspoilt part of the country.
Just a few miles away are the Jurassic Coast beaches of Sidmouth and Budleigh Salterton.
