Nestled on the hillside that leads down to the shores at Lyme Regis, The Oyster & Fish House offers the very best local fish, seafood and produce available; from the waters of the Jurassic Coast to the nearby woodlands, several ingredients are curated by local artisans who know their craft like the back of their hand.
Mark Hix’s latest seafood and oyster restaurant has a light and spacious dining room with floor to ceiling windows and is surrounded by a wrap around terrace with unimaginable views. To one side there’s a deck area where you can watch the comings and goings of the fishing boats in the harbour. If the weather is good sit outside and enjoy the sea breeze, though if you’re dining in the evening you’d be wise to bring your own blankets as it can get chilly later on.
The menu changes twice a day, depending on what has been caught that morning and the rule is that ingredients must be responsibly sourced and seasonal. With so many amazing offerings on the menu you might take a while to decide what you want to eat – starters include Shellfish Soup with rouille and croutons, and Flodge smoked salmon ‘Hix’ cure with soda bread; on the mains are temptations like Fillet of cod with whipped potatoes and Shetland mussels, and Grilled Monkfish with black butter and capers. If you have room for pudding, how about Norfolk treacle tart with vanilla ice cream or Buttermilk pudding with sea buckthorn and alexanders? Heavenly!
Even the alcohol is from the local area - Somerset Cider Brandy, wine from Lyme Bay Winery and a selection of beers from all over the South West. There’s something for everyone, with vegetarian, vegan and children’s menus all available. For bookings of 16 or more there’s a wonderful feast menu designed for sharing, like the Mixed Fish and Shellfish Feast - delicious!
Booking is not available for the outdoors area. Fluffy friends are welcome on the deck and terrace.
