The Smugglers Kitchen, Beer, Devon

The Smugglers Kitchen offers a unique dining experience in the lovely little fishing village of Beer on the East Devon coast. The setting is warm and cosy, in an old building with wooden floors, exposed stone walls and original timbers. The ambience is relaxed and friendly, the staff attentive and the food, divine.

The main menu features starters of Vietnamese salad (sliced chicken breast, Chinese leaf, carrot, mint, coriander & spring onion in a house sweet chilli and peanut dressing with crispy wontons), Zucchini fritti (crispy fritter of courgette, feta, dill and cumin with hummus and salad), and Crispy calamari (with yellow pepper and ginger dip, and baby leaf salad). On the mains are temptations like Smugglers seafood linguine (linguine pasta with cod, salmon, prawns and mussels, with cherry tomato 7 shallot in a white wine, parsley & cream sauce), West County Pork belly (slow roasted West Country pork belly, mash potato, fine green beans, black pudding & West Country cider, pork gravy and apple sauce), and Beer battered fish & chips (made with Devon Cove IPA, skin on fries, peas and tartare sauce). There’s also a good choice of burgers, burritos and sides, so it’s a fussy eater indeed who says there’s nothing they fancy, especially considering that food allergies, intolerances and special diets can be catered for, and that there’s a separate menu for vegetarians/vegans, and for children.

If you have a sweet tooth and have room for pudding, the dessert menu is lipsmackingly good, with Apple & caramel frangipani tart, Ferrero Rocher cheesecake, Devon Affogato and Sticky toffee pudding being the kind of thing to expect. Sip and wash down with whatever you want from the carefully curated menu of local spirits, draft lagers and craft ales, and a globally inspired wine list. Excellent.
