The Wheelwright Inn, Colyford, Colyton, Devon

On the main road through Colyford, The Wheelwright Inn isn’t far from the Jurassic Coast so maybe come here for a bite to eat on your way back from a day at the seaside. This historic Devon pub is picture postcard pretty, with a neatly thatched roof; not surprisingly, it was once the home of the village wheelwright.

The Wheelwright is a traditionally run freehouse with light and airy modern interiors. The main bar is also thatched and for the colder days, there’s a wood-burner to sit close to; there’s also a dining room and at the front of the pub, outdoor seating where you can sit and watch the comings and goings.

The menu is pub classics alongside dishes like Baked salmon with lemon and dill creamy sauce, baked cherry tomatoes and new potatoes, Confit duck leg with cherry sauce, roasted new potatoes and crispy kale, and Chunky beef & carrot stew with mash and peas. As you’d expect, ingredients are sourced locally where possible.
