Colyford, Devon

Despite the Lyme Regis to Exeter road running straight through the village, Colyford has a very lively community, served well by a Post Office & General Stores, an excellent Butchers, and two pubs. The village was once an Ancient Borough and though it may seem strange when the population is only around 800, a mayor is still elected, along with a Burgesses’ Committee that has a Flag Captain and a Mace Bearer (got to love those old traditions!).

There’s always something going on at the village hall and there are regular quiz nights and live music at The Wheelwright Inn and The White Hart, but the biggest event of the year is Colyford Goose Fayre, held in September. Locals and visitors come out to join in the fun, starting with a parade that follows the Mayor to the Fayre Ground where there’s much merry making with stalls, activities, entertainment and food – and a lot of medieval costumes!

There are some good walks from Colyford, including a short one along the River Coly to Colyton, starting from the Tram station. The ride on the Seaton Tramway from Seaton to Colyford or Colyton takes you through the wetlands of the Axe estuary, an area that’s home to an abundance of wildlife and migratory birds.
