Thurlbear Wood, Thurlbear, Stoke St Mary, Somerset
If you fancy getting out and connecting with nature, maybe hugging a few trees, go to Thurlbear Wood just a few miles from Taunton in Somerset. This ancient woodland connects with part of the Herepath which starts at Staple Hill, so if you want to have a longer walk, set off from there.
Follow the woodland paths and take the time to stop and stare; in the spring time the glades are carpeted with bluebells, the hedgerows are full of dog violets and primroses, and here and there you’ll see spotted orchids. Look out for butterflies, enjoy the birdsong, just soak up that whole vibe of being outdoors in the fresh air.
You can go for a stroll around Thurlbear Wood anytime of year but bear in mind that it can get a bit muddy underfoot in the winter so you’d be wise to take your wellington boots. There’s not a lot of parking at the woods so a good idea is to park in the village and walk up – it’s not far and the exercise will do you good.
