Fire Beacon Hill, Sidmouth, Devon

Fire Beacon Hill is a Local Nature Reserve not far from Sidmouth on the East Devon coast: as the name suggests, it’s the site of one of the beacons used in Elizabethan times to warn of the approaching Spanish Armada. Follow the waymarked trails up to the top and explore the criss-crossing paths; keep as quiet as you can if you want to see some of the wild life – the reserve is home to quite a range, including yellow hammers and increasingly rare Dartford warblers that breed here. Stonechats and nightjars can be heard and it’s a great opportunity to look out for rare moths and butterflies. Exmoor ponies and Belted Galloway cattle graze in fenced enclosures, all part of how the reserve is managed.

Fire Beacon Hill is comprised of a small area of lowland heath, forestry plantations and agricultural land; if you take a picnic you’ll find plenty of spots to spread your rug and enjoy panoramic views of Lyme Bay and the Jurassic coastline.

If you don’t have a picnic, head back down for lunch at The Bowd Inn after your walk.
