Langdon Hill, Morecombelake, Dorset

If you’re out and about exploring the beautiful Jurassic Coast when you’re on your holiday in the South West, turn off the A35 to Langdon Hill and go for a stroll through the Scots pine and larch woods; if it’s springtime, well lucky you, because there will be a carpet of bluebells beneath the trees, and that is a sight to behold. If it’s autumn, go hunting for fungi, see what you can identify, look out for deer foraging, breathe in those wonderful earthy smells.

Langdon Hill forms part of the National Trust owned Golden Cap Estate and there are several waymarked trails you can follow if you want to extend your walk further than the perimeter of the woods; stroll out to Golden Cap, the highest point on the south coast of England, take in the bracing sea air and the glorious coastal views. If you’re wondering why it’s called Golden Cap, you have to see it when the sun shines on it and it all becomes evident when the minerals in the rock give it its golden hue – best appreciated on a summers’ evening.

Venture off down to the ruined church at Stanton St Gabriels, a lost hamlet deserted almost 200 years ago, or wander over to Seatown on the South West Coast Path; stop for fish and chips at The Anchor Inn, roll up your trouser legs and have a paddle in the sea. These are lazy days for slowing down and being in the moment, the kind of stuff that holidays are made of.

There’s a car park (charged) at Langdon Hill, picnic benches and a small play area.
