Manor Mill, Branscombe, Devon
If you decide to go to Branscombe when you’re staying nearby at your Devon holiday cottage, allow enough time to visit Manor Mill. The setting, in a peaceful valley near the sea, is beautiful, and it’s a fascinating place to visit, with all the old milling machinery, including the huge waterwheel, fully restored by the National Trust to full working order. You can see how corn was milled, flour made and learn about how life would have been for the miller back in the day.
Manor Mill was built in the 19th century and it’s thought that at one time, almost the whole village got their flour from here. Like a lot of places, in fell into disrepair after the war and sat there, empty and unloved, until the National Trust stepped in.
Take your time, have a good look round, then go and see the working forge back in the village, and pop into the Masons Arms for lunch, or go down to The Sea Shanty Beach Café by the shore.
Opening times vary throughout the year, so check the website before your visit.
