Otterton Mill, Otterton, Budleigh Salterton, Devon

Otterton Mill has a lovely setting, in the quiet village of Otterton near Budleigh Salterton, just a stone’s throw from the East Devon coast. The family who own and run the mill are very committed to keeping this wonderful piece of history alive so the ancient mill workings are open to the public. They’ve been producing flour here for over 1000 years, to age old methods; go along and see the working waterwheel, find out how they make their signature stoneground wholemeal flour. Have a taste as it emerges fresh from the flour chute, chat to the mill workers, who are more than happy to tell you all about what they do and how the mill works.

Browse around the shop as well, rickety old stairs take you up and down to rooms on different levels where you can browse the work of over 50 talented artists from all over Devon and the South West – there’s glassware, photography, textiles, jewellery, ceramics – the list goes on and on, the problem is deciding what to buy.

Then you can go to the award-winning restaurant for lunch; it’ll be good, we can assure you. Food is locally sourced food and besides what’s on the menu they do daily specials. What’s nice is a traditional Devon cream tea (cream first!) enjoyed in the garden, in the sunshine.

If you’re inclined to stretch your legs go for a stroll along the river and do a bit of nature-spotting whilst you’re at it. Keep a look out for herons and swans and if you’re very, very lucky you might get a glimpse of one of the more elusive creatures – perhaps an otter or one of the beavers that have made their home on the River Otter. A short walk downstream will bring you to the South West Coast Path where you can continue your walk along the clifftops with the glorious coastal views forever in your sights.

If you’re staying at Stonehayes Farm in the summer, keep an eye out for events at Otterton Mill; the atmosphere is wonderful with live music outside and twinkling lights right next to the mill stream. These dos tend to sell out quick though, so book in advance.
