River Cottage, Axminster, Devon
A visit to River Cottage is a must for foodies and fans of Hugh Fearnley-Whiitngstall. It’s not far at all from Stonehayes Farm, so when you’re here on your holiday in one of our cosy Devon cottages, pop on over.
River Cottage is hidden away in a very scenic valley just a few miles from Axminster. The beaches at Axmouth and Lyme Regis aren’t far, so plan it well and make a day of it. Stop by here for breakfast, lunch or tea and cake, then head over to the coast.
The Kitchen & Store is at the top of 100 acre organic farm so the views over the Devon countryside are incredible, especially from out on the terrace. You’d expect the food to be good, and it is; on the lunch menu are dishes like Chorizo meatballs, spicy tomato & bean sauce, herby bashed celeriac & spuds, Hot-smoked onions, roasted mushrooms, mozzarella, RC spicy kimkraut and beetchup on seeded sourdough, and Bubble & squeak, wilted greens, poached egg and cheese sauce. Leave room for pud because they are too good to miss - Chelsea bun & sun-dried apricot bread & butter pudding with, vanilla ice cream, Chocolate, beetroot & Somerset cider brandy torte, sunflower seed cream, and Pear, apple & ginger fumble.
Children’s portions are available at half price, there’s no need to book as it’s all very casual and done on a drop-by basis, and your four legged friends are welcome, so you won’t have to leave them in the car.
The 17th century farmhouse, kitchen gardens and livestock that you see on the telly are further down the track and can be seen on open days or if you book for one of the regular events they hold – seasonal lunches and suppers, feast nights and workshops.
