Our holiday cottages at Stonehayes Farm are perfect for autumn breaks in Devon for 2021 – or any year for that matter, but why not treat yourself as soon as you can? We have five cottages in the country, sleeping 4-14 people; tucked away in the Blackdown Hills surrounded by the most beautiful countryside with views over the Otter Valley. You’ll be warm and cosy with all you need to enjoy a wonderfully relaxing autumn break.
Just imagine… walks in the fields and the woods, climbing the hills, heading back to your holiday cottage to light the fire and snuggle up with mugs of hot chocolate and plates of buttery crumpets. Now that’s our idea of bliss! Then there’s the peace and quiet, because with 15 acres of private grounds to explore here at Stonehayes Farm, it’s like a different world – one that’s far, far away from the chaos, the hullaballoo. There’ll be birds twittering in the hedgerows, rabbits nibbling the grass, squirrels scampering about, owls hooting at night, and you may even be lucky enough to see a fox slinking across the field, or a deer grazing in the open.
We love autumn mornings too, the ‘mists and mellow fruitfulness’ of Keats’ poetry; that gentle haze you get that time of year, and the soft sunshine, the goldenness. That’s the thing, the weather is usually still good in the autumn so there’s plenty of opportunity to get outside and fill your lungs with fresh country air – or to head off to the coast and feel the sea breeze in your hair. We’re lucky enough to be close to both here; well, the country is right on the doorstep of course, but the coast isn’t far, you can be on the beaches of East Devon or West Dorset in about half an hour. There are small towns like Budleigh Salterton, Sidmouth, Seaton and Lyme Regis, or quiet villages like Beer, Branscombe and Burton Bradstock. All are lovely, and are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Jurassic Coast, well known for its fossils and unique geology.
There are so many ways to fill the days on autumn breaks in Devon 2021. Take the dog for a stroll along the shore, go for a bracing clifftop walk on the South West Coast Path, head off to explore the bracken-clad heaths and lush river valleys of Exmoor National Park, or closer to home, the Blackdown Hills where you can climb to the top of Culm Beacon or just up behind Stonehayes Farm, Dumpdon Hill; you’ll have incredible views that roll on for miles and miles across the unspoilt landscape.
Don’t forget, our Devon holiday cottages are family friendly as well as dog friendly, so if you’re here for a weekend or for the October half term you can have a family day out at one of the great attractions in this part of the world. Our favourites are Wildwood Devon, Crealy Theme Park, Killerton and The Donkey Sanctuary near Sidmouth, though just up the road from Stonehayes Farm you can hang out at Dunkeswell Airfield and watch planes come and go, parachutes landing, from the warmth of the Aviator Coffee Bar & Restaurant. Just down the road is Otter Valley Ice Cream & Field Kitchen where they serve some very unusual flavoured gelato ice creams made with milk from their own cows, and amazing wood fired pizzas.
